WHAT IS HYPNOTHERAPY

There are many misconceptions about hypnotherapy many of which are influenced by stage hypnosis, often preventing people from wanting to try the therapy.

You are mentally awake and aware of everything and as the client are in the driving seat and in complete control with the therapist acting as a navigator. You only take on suggestions which you feel are suited to you.

Hypnotherapy takes on a collaborative approach with you working alongside the therapist, enlisting your motivation and participation as prerequisites for successful therapy.

Sessions are modelled off a Skills training approach where you’ll learn tools and techniques that will empower you and instil you with confidence to approach situations head on and to problem solve effectively.

Hypnotism Fact and fiction

Would I be under someone else’s control?

Just as you cannot get stuck in a daydream, meditation or your imagination you cannot get stuck in hypnosis, with time you will naturally bring yourself back or drift into a natural sleep. Hypnosis has been recognised as an effective treatment by the British Medical Association (BMA), the American Medical Association (AMA), the American Psychology Association (APA) and NICE guidance.

Can I be hypnotised and what does it feel like?

Everyone in principal can be hypnotised, some people are easier than others to hypnotise, however everyone can learn to improve their ability with practice and instruction. It has been shown to help if you relax, think positively and imagine the things being suggested. The more you understand hypnotherapy, the more effective it is likely to be. People often find hypnosis to be a pleasant experience, owing to the deep mental and physical relaxation acquired during the session.

Would it be like being asleep?

Hypnosis is not a state of sleep or unconsciousness, the majority of people report being aware of everything that happens. Having said that, it is normal during a state of hypnotic relaxation to feel certain levels of drowsiness, where the mind wonders in and out of a sleep like state.
